ASA Masterclass - Leadership & training development
Sonographers often mentor or train students in their workplace. Designed specifically with the sonographic workplace in mind, the skills needed to undertake an effective leadership and training role are at the core of this ASA Masterclass. This is an interactive, day-long seminar comprising discussions, self-appraisal and skills practice exercises.
ASA Masterclass - Research and the sonographer
Participants will be provided with an overview of Evidence Based Practice (EBP). They will gain skills in asking an answerable clinical question, accessing, appraising and applying evidence into clinical practice. Participants will be provided with an overview of qualitative and quantitative research designs, with particular attention towards assessing psychometric properties of measurements and protocols.
ASA Masterclass - Dealing with difficult situations
This ASA Masterclass is designed specifically for sonographers and addresses a range of issues and situations sonographers are likely to experience as part of their job, including the personal effect on the sonographer. Delegates will work towards developing group-devised strategies based on their own experiences, and facilitated by a skilled presenter, familiar with clinical environments.

Medical Radiations Practice Board
The ASA has had ongoing dialogue with the Medical Radiation Practice Board regarding the requirement of NSW Health for sonographers to register with the MRPB. We have asked the MRPB to urgently advise sonographers they are not required to register with the MRPB if they practice exclusively as sonographers.
We have also made an urgent representation to the NSW Department of Health, as sonographers were clearly omitted from the scope of the MRPB. The requirement of NSW Health we believe has occurred because sonographers are employed under the Medical Radiations Scientists (Medical Radiographer) Award, not because they utilise radiation in their practice.
The ASA has argued to NSW Health it is not possible for sonographers to meet the requirements of the MRPB, as they do not necessarily hold an approved radiography qualification, are unable to comply with the professional development and recency of practice requirements and sonographers are not included on the table of Protected Titles within the National Law that established the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme.
We have further argued the past experience and qualifications a sonographer holds are inconsequential to their current practice and cannot be applied for the purposes of eligibility with the MRPB – unless they are requiring registration for that previous profession. It is recognised that many sonographers have previously practiced as radiographers however, if they are no longer using radiation, their sonography practice does not fall under the scope of the MRPB. Those who undertake radiography and sonography are, of course, dual professionals who are required to be registered. We encourage these sonographers to apply to the MRPB.
The ASA recommend sonographers wait for further advice from us in the coming week before making any applications to the MRPB.
Further information can also be obtained from the MRPB website.
CQU Ultrasound course
Sorry to raise a subject already extensively discussed. We currently have a student from this course with us for their first prac. so it has raised a few issues amongst the sonographers here. Firstly what are everyones thoughts on if this students will all be employed in four years time? I think there are 80 or so in the course. Secondly I assume they will go onto the same award as qualified sonographers. This would in most states make these graduates amongst the highest paid graduates in the country. I am in two minds about this- on one hand I dont think it would be advantageous to me or our profession to have a whole heap of "cheaper" sonographers available. On the other hand I have recieved pay rises over years of work within my field of medical imaging and progression within the workplace and it doesn't seem these students undertake the same level of work or have the same background experience within the field. Just wondered what everyones thoughts on this were.
