ASA roundup
Nominations for the ASA’s Board of Directors – now open One of the most worthwhile contributions you can make as a professional is to volunteer your time for the advancement of your profession. As an ASA Director, you will learn new skills whilst developing a broad understanding of the Association and benefit from making new and lasting connections with your peers. Of course, it also provides you with an alternative opportunity to accrue CPD points. Nominations must be made on the prescribed form and close at 5pm EST on Tuesday 13 April 2010.
If you are considering nominating and require further information, please contact the ASA’s President Faye Temple.
SGM outcome - Do you have an interest in upholding the standards of sonography practice in Australia? Following ratification of changes to both our Constitution and Code of Professional Conduct, the ASA’s complaints handling process will commence on 1 July 2010. We are now seeking Expressions of Interest from sonographers wishing to participate on the Disciplinary Committee or to join a pool to hear Appeals when/if necessary. Further details on these opportunities, as well as progress reports on work towards the introduction of the complaints handling process, are available from the dedicated Complaints web page or by contacting Elaine Trevaskis – ASA CEO on p: 03 9585 2996.
The competency framework for sonographers – consultation draft now available The recommendations of the project report “Scoping study of role evolution for sonographers” (1 June 2009) identified, among other things, the need to clearly define the competencies of a sonographer before an extended role can be established. The ASA Board of Directors concurred with these recommendations and committed resources to initiate a self-funded project to develop a competency framework. We are pleased to advise that the framework, which seeks to identify the skills, fields of knowledge and attributes that a competent diagnostic medical sonographer utilises to perform their role at key stages of their career, is now available as a consultation draft.
Your feedback is important. Before publishing the competency framework, it is important that stakeholders have the opportunity to provide feedback and input. The ASA encourages all members, individuals and organisations with an interest in the sonography profession to review the consultation draft. Submissions received by COB 20 April 2010 will be considered during a final review phase prior to publication in mid-2010. Printed copies are available on request – enquiries should be addressed to Elaine Trevaskis – CEO or p: 03 9585 2996.
Position statement – registration of sonographers Registration of health professionals will be in the spotlight this year as the new national registration scheme, initially incorporating 10 professions, commences in July. It is timely therefore that the ASA, as the peak body and leading voice for sonographers, release our Position Statement which will be utilised when liaising with stakeholders and regulators. The ASA contends that regulation of the performance of ultrasound examinations must incorporate all professions utilising ultrasound equipment including sonographers and that the national registration model provides an appropriate vehicle for this regulation.
In seeking to collaborate and strengthen the impact of our position on registration, the ASA recently shared a draft of our position statement with other professional organisations with the intent of releasing a joint statement. Some ASA members may have viewed a statement recently published by ASUM which bears a strong resemblance to our statement. The ASA notes with significant disappointment that large portions of our statement were reprinted by them. ASUM’s actions were taken without ASA consent and without any reference being made to the ASA as a source. The ASA Board has expressed its disillusionment to ASUM as their inappropriate actions have unfortunately denied us the opportunity to develop a strong and united platform on this important issue.
ASUM retraction Members were made aware in late 2009 of an issue arising due to an article published in ASUM’s publication. The issue has now been settled and ASUM have agreed to print a retraction, and compensate the ASA for a portion of the legal fees incurred in resolving this dispute.
